The Loowit Trail circumnavigates Mount St. Helens in Washington State, past old-growth forests, waterfalls, meadows, and the leftovers of the volcano’s 1980 eruption.
A group of us ran the roughly 30 mile trail in August of 2018, starting from Climber’s Bivouac Campground. Watch the video below.
Including the 2 mile trail from Climber’s Bivouac to the junction with the Loowit Trail, it took us about 10 hours to run the roughy 34 miles (55 kms), with 7,700′ (2,365 metres) of elevation gain.
The next day, a few of us did another roughly 19 mile (30 km) ‘lollipop’ run starting from Ape Canyon to explore the area a little further to the east of the Volcano, including Windy Ridge. It was great to get an unobstructed view of Mount St. Helens after it had been in the clouds for most of the previous day!
