5 Winter Trail Running Tips

February 22, 2016 by Jeff Pelletier 2 Comments

This article was originally written for a post on The Manual, ‘The Essential Guide for Men’ which appeared on Feb. 3rd. See that original post here.

For some runners, the arrival of snow will signal a transition to training on skis or perhaps running indoors on a treadmill. For others like myself, it’s simply a chance to play in the mountains in a less structured way.

Trail running in the winter can certainly bring with it its own challenges, but it can be a lot of fun provided you are adequately prepared with the right equipment and follow a couple of simple pieces of advice. Here are 5 tips for having fun while winter trail running this season.

5 Common Heart Rate Training Mistakes for Runners

February 1, 2016 by Jeff Pelletier 1 Comment

Heart rate training can be very useful for runners hoping to train more effectively by helping us to avoid those dreaded junk miles. Heart rate monitors can be purchased as chest straps and some GPS watches now even have built-in optical sensors on the wrist.

Since I’ve been training with heart-rate for quite a few years myself, and as an ambassador for Suunto, I often get asked about training with heart-rate. I’ve also realized in talking with people that there’s quite a bit of confusion on how heart rate can and can’t be used.

Here are 5 common mistakes that runners make when training with heart rate.

Year in Review: My 5 Biggest Accomplishments in 2015

January 5, 2016 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments

2015 was my third full season on the trails and was by far my biggest. After running my first 100 miler in 2014, I wanted to raise the bar again by going a little faster and a little further, while taking care of some unfinished business and revisiting one of my first races, and testing my limits at a new style of racing.

This season wasn’t all about racing though, as I had an amazing summer of training that included a week in Colorado to pace a friend at the Hardrock 100. I also led my first two trail running clinics with North Shore Athletics, and got to be a part of Gary Robbins’ FKT of the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier while helping on a film project with the Ginger Runner.

As I set my goals for 2016, it’s time for me to now take a look back at my 5 biggest accomplishments in my 2015 racing season.

7 Lessons From My First Stage Race, the Grand to Grand Ultra

October 17, 2015 by Jeff Pelletier 1 Comment

A few weeks ago, I completed the 7 day, 6 stage, 273 km Grand to Grand Ultra, North America’s only unsupported stage race. I’d left the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, along with an international field of 116 other runners, with 91 of us arriving at the Grand Staircase in Utah a week later after running through sand dunes, slot canyons, river beds, and cactus fields. We carried all of our own food and supplies for the week, aside from water provided on course, and shelter and hot water at camp each night.

I managed to finish in 4th place overall and 1st in my age group, in a cumulative time of 34 hrs 45 mins, just 1 hr 34 mins behind Yukon Ultra champion Tommy Chen in first, 1 hr behind 5-times Marathons Des Sables winner Mohamad Ahansal in second, and 32 mins behind Swiss machine Peter Osterwalder in third. I couldn’t be happier with my performance in what was my first stage race, but I definitely learned a few things both in my research before hand and during the race itself.

Here are the 7 things I learned in my first stage race.

Fat Dog Recovery, and One More Big Race: August Training Recap

September 16, 2015 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments

My race at the Fat Dog 120 (+10) Mile didn’t go exactly as planned, but was definitely still a success. After a few well-deserved days off, I was out to test out the legs which felt surprisingly good. But the fatigue would last for several weeks, along with an insatiable hunger.

Our third day on the Tour du Mont Blanc would be o Our third day on the Tour du Mont Blanc would be our longest so far but would also be the most scenic. We began the morning by dropping down into Courmayeur, the site of the start and finish of Tor Des Geants. From there we actually followed the final 10k of the race route, all of which I’d run in the dark when I ran the race back in 2018. I had no idea this leg of the race was so beautiful!

The panoramic views continued throughout the day as we traversed the valley before dropping down into Switzerland and our refuge in La Fouly. We covered just over 40k with close to 2,100m of elevation gain in another 9 hours on feet.
Our second day on the Tour du Mont Blanc started w Our second day on the Tour du Mont Blanc started with a climb to Col du Bonhomme - a beautiful start to the morning. From there, we dropped down to Les Chapieux where we grabbed some food for the road. We then had a long, steady climb to Col de la Seigne with stunning views of glaciers the entire way. We stopped to eat at the summit before descending into Italy, passing by the famous Rifugio Elisabetta on our way to our own rifugio on a hilltop above the city of Courmayeur. We covered just over 38k with 2,200m of elevation gain in another 9 hours on feet.
We started the Tour Du Mont Blanc last week from C We started the Tour Du Mont Blanc last week from Chamonix, right at the future location of the UTMB starting line. Our route over the next 5 days would mostly follow the UTMB course, although we decided to skip the diversion to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in favour of climbing up and over Col du Tricot.

Our first day ended with a steep climb up to Refuge des prés where we settled in with a warm shower, a beer, and big meal. We covered 37k with 2,400m of elevation gain in just under 9 hours on feet.
Voilà, c’est fini! We arrived back in Chamonix Voilà, c’est fini! We arrived back in Chamonix on Monday after setting out on the Tour du Mont Blanc four days prior.

We covered more than 175k with close to 10,000m of elevation gain, as we travelled through Italy & Switzerland before returning to France where our journey around the Mont Blanc Massif began.

This trail was simply incredible. It was certainly busier and less remote than many of the long distance routes I’ve done in the past. But it’s pretty amazing to be able to move so fast and light through the mountains with the comfort of a shower and a warm bed each night, along with great food to fuel you along the way.

Can’t wait to put the film together from this one! Now to recover in Annecy as we begin our taper for UTMB. #tmb #tourdumontblanc
