My Winter Trail Running Gear [VIDEO]

December 31, 2020 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
Winter Trail Running Gear

Winter can still be a great time to hit the trails. But when the temperatures drop and the snow begins to fall in the mountains, the gear we use needs to change as well.

In this post, I cover some of the winter trail running gear that I rely on, along with a few tips for staying safe in the snow.

Salomon XA 25 Set Review

I got the Salomon XA 25 litre pack a couple of months ago. I’ve had a chance to test it out on a handful 2-3 day fastpacking trips and it has quickly become my favourite pack for my fast and light adventures.

Read on to learn what it is about this pack that I love so much, along with a complete video review.

My 10 Trail Running Essentials to Stay Safe on the Trails [VIDEO]

August 19, 2020 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
10 Essentials for Trail Running

As trail runners, we like to carry the absolute minimum amount of gear so that we can travel as fast and light as possible. But things can change in a split second with something as trivial as a rolled ankle or simply by getting a little lost, turning what maybe should have been a 2 hour run into an 8 hour slog. You might need to hunker down to wait for help, or find yourself stopping to help someone else in need.

That’s why I’ve begun to approach every run in the same way by asking myself the same question, “what’s the worst that could happen on my run today, and what gear can I bring to help deal with it?”

In this post and video I’ll go over the 10 trail running essentials that I always carry to stay safe on the trails.

Salomon XA Filter Cap Review vs Katadyn Befree [VIDEO]

August 13, 2020 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
Salomon XA Filter Cap Review

I recently got the XA water filter from Salomon. The filter cap is sold separately, or bundled with a 490ml soft flask which fits perfectly in my Salomon pack. But how does it compare to the competition, namely the Katadyn BeFree that I’ve been using for the past couple of years?

In this post, I’ll compare the similarities and differences between the two filters, including the functionality, flow rate, and compatibility with other flasks.

I had a great time on the running leg of the relay I had a great time on the running leg of the relay at @coastmtntrail ‘s inaugural Conquer the Vedder this past weekend. The 15km course took me from Cultus lake to Vedder Mountain along beautiful, winding single track trails. I hadn’t run a race that short in years, so it was refreshing to just go out and run hard without worrying about pace and nutrition (and without 12lbs of gear on my shoulders). 😉 Big thanks to @tyholtanphoto and @srobarts for the great snaps. 📸

This weekend we competed in the first edition of C This weekend we competed in the first edition of Conquer the Vedder, a super fun multi-sport race by @coastmtntrail in Chilliwack, BC. What a great event!

Saturday was the solo, with a paddle board on Cultus Lake, followed by a gravel ride and run up and around Vedder Mountain. Sunday, I ran the run portion of the relay with @audreelafreniere and @alpineclicker who’d both done the solo the day before. We were all on tired legs but managed to squeak out a 4th place finish in the mixed division. Of course, we filmed the whole thing so stay tuned for the video.

Congrats to @garyrobbins and @geoff.langford on such a successful event. I know how hard they worked to put this one together and it’s sure to be a local favourite for years to come.
I finally tried stand-up paddle boarding last week I finally tried stand-up paddle boarding last weekend and I didn’t fall in! So I’d definitely call that a success. SUP is even more enjoyable and relaxing than I thought it would be and what a great way to get out on the water again.

We live just a few minutes away from Deep Cove which I suspect will be our go-to spot to launch throughout the summer, but with these new inflatable paddleboards from @goosehillsup we’ll be able to bring them along on camping trips and for recovery paddles after long runs anytime we’re near the water.

If you’re curious to see what it’s all about and to learn about our boards, check out my latest video on YouTube (link in bio). So who’s up for a paddle this summer?
Yesterday was all about pushing past my comfort zo Yesterday was all about pushing past my comfort zone. A group of us took a Steep Ski course on Blackcomb Mountain and spent the day learning to ski Double Black Diamonds 😳.

Don’t expect to see me in @salomon’s next ski film, but my confidence on the steeps has increased ten fold! #timetoplay
I’m so inspired by the people I met at the Namib I’m so inspired by the people I met at the Namib Desert Race, in particular Dr. Rob Ripley here who won the race at 60 years old. The idea that I could, in theory at least, return to this race in 20 years and beat a bunch of guys in their 30’s and 40’s is pretty motivating!

That’s why I’m so excited to be joined by Rob for a live Q&A this Friday morning on YouTube. We’ll be talking everything from training and pacing, to gear, nutrition, and recovery. Join us live to ask your questions in the chat! (Link in bio.) #RacingNamibia
