March Training Recap: Racing Season has Begun; and Remember to Blink

April 2, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
Fog over Buntzen Lake

March was all about building volume for this coming weekend’s Diez Vista 50k, along with running my first two races of the year that I mentioned in February: The Cypress Yeti 10k Snowshoe Race, and the Coast Mountain Trail Series Cap Crusher 8k where I placed 2nd overall – my shortest race ever, my first podium finish and a great start to the trail racing season!

Proud New Sponsored CLIF Bar Ambassador

March 28, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier 3 Comments
CLIF Bar Sponsorship

I’m very proud to have recently been selected to be a Sponsored CLIF Bar Ambassador. In exchange for being fueled by great CLIF products, I’ll now be helping to spread the word about CLIF and to give samples to people I meet at some of my training runs and races throughout the season.

CLIF Bar Minis

CLIF Bar Minis, perfect for on the run.

I’ve been a huge fan of CLIF products for years, having used CLIF SHOT® Energy Gels and CLIF Energy Bars in the majority of my training and racing. I’ve also recently started using CLIF Builder’s Bars as part of my recovery, post-run.

What I like most about CLIF Bar is its commitment to “a healthier, more just and sustainable food system”.

The company continually strives to reduce its environmental footprint, sourcing ingredients using fair labor practices, and to increase its purchase of organic ingredients. To date, reportedly 70 percent of the ingredients it purchases are certified organic and certified-sustainable, with a goal of increasing this to 80 percent by 2015.

Learn more about CLIF Bar & Company’s story, food philosophy, and products on their website, and if you see me at a race or training run and haven’t tried CLIF products or some of their newest flavours, let me know!

CMTS Cap Crusher 8k Race Report

March 25, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier 6 Comments
Crossing the Line at Cap Crusher 8k

This weekend marked my last big weekend of training before Diez Vista 50k in just under two weeks.

Saturday, I joined a group of another 70 or so runners in Squamish for the first of several Squamish 50 Orientation Runs. I’m not running SQ50 this year, but the orientation runs are always a great way to meet some new faces and to hang out with old friends. I tried to keep the pace in check though for the 21 km and 2.5 hours or so, knowing that the big event for the weekend was still to come. After all, Sunday was to be my first trail race of the year, the Cap Crusher 8k, part of the Coast Mountain Trail Series and said to be “the toughest 8km trail race in Canada” with 500m of gain (which would translate to a 3000m 50k).

Garibaldi Lake Snowshoe Running Trip Report (w/VIDEO)

March 12, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments

Garibaldi Lake is one of the most scenic destinations in BC and is one of my favourite places to run in the summer but, until recently, I had never seen the lake in the winter. A group of us ran to the lake and then on to the meadows in January with our snowshoes in just over 5 hours to and from the Rubble Creek parking lot just south of Whistler.

Check out the video above which I shot using a GoPro 3, along with the photos below from my Instagram feed. You can also read a full trip report from a run to Garibaldi Lake and Panorama Ridge last summer.

It feels so good to be able to run again! This wee It feels so good to be able to run again! This week marked the first time I've been able to run on the trails and my longest run in over 5 weeks.

Two weeks before that, I had strained my hamstring during a run so I took a week off to let it rest. I obviously should have taken it more seriously as the following week I suffered a grade 2 hamstring tear while running in the snow. I ended up with bruising and couldn’t walk more than a few steps without pain.

If you follow me on Strava, you've no doubt noticed all of the rehab runs and strength training I've been dutifully doing as I work weekly with a physio on a rehabilitation program. I believe the injury was actually not the result of overuse, but likely due entirely to mobility issues in my hips and hamstrings. I'd put in a half-dozen days on skis in the two weeks prior and hadn't been doing a lot of running, but I had been doing a lot of sitting.

So I've got lots of work to come as I continue to address the underlying issues, to slowly rebuild volume, and to ensure that I come back even stronger so that I can set myself up for success for the rest of the season and beyond! 🚀
