Fastpacking the Sunshine Coast Trail: 115 km in 3 Days [VIDEO]

April 28, 2020 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
Sunshine Coast Trail

The Sunshine Coast Trail is Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail, just 5 hours North of Vancouver, BC. It’s a unique and beautiful backcountry experience that stretches 180km from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay, along coastal shorelines, through old growth forests, and up to panoramic mountaintops.

Early June of 2019, my friend Adam and I planned on fast packing a large portion of the trail, starting from Powell River and running 115 km back to Saltery Bay. Our primary goal was to train and test out our ultralight gear for our upcoming 5-day fastpack of the Tahoe Rim Trail a few weeks later.

Trail Running in Puerto Vallarta – Boca de Tamatlan Trail to Quimixto Falls

November 30, 2019 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments

Puerto Vallarta is a beach resort city on the Pacific coast of Mexico. It’s a popular destination for those seeking sun, water sports, and nightlife. But it’s not exactly known for its trail running.

I had been to Puerto Vallarta many times over the years to visit my sister who lives in the area, but it wasn’t until a visit in 2018 that I discovered this little gem that has since become my favourite local trail.

Running the Loowit Trail Around Mount St. Helens [VIDEO]

January 30, 2019 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments

The Loowit Trail circumnavigates Mount St. Helens in Washington State, past old-growth forests, waterfalls, meadows, and the leftovers of the volcano’s 1980 eruption.

A group of us ran the roughly 30 mile trail in August of 2018, starting from Climber’s Bivouac Campground. Watch the video below.

Running the Kalalau Trail on the Napali Coast in Kauai in One Day [VIDEO]

January 15, 2017 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
The beautiful Kalalau Trail

The Kalalau Trail leads 11 miles along the rugged Nā Pali Coast on the north shore of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The Trail traverses 5 lush valleys, above towering cliffs, before ending at Kalalau Beach where it is blocked by sheer, fluted pali.

Most hikers will take between 2-3 days to finish the trail. While in Kauai on vacation in late-November, our plan was to travel fast and light, running the entire 22 mile (35 km) return trip with 6,500 feet of elevation gain plus descent in roughly 8 hours.

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal [Video]

April 16, 2015 by Jeff Pelletier 2 Comments

The Annapurna Circuit is a trek in central Nepal that climbs to an altitude of 5,400m through Thorung La pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world, below peaks that rise 6000-8000m in elevation from the Annapurna Range.

We attempted to complete the trek in about 15 days starting mid-December of 2013, when the shoulder season promised much smaller crowds but with it a risk of deep snow that early winter can bring to the Pass.

It feels so good to be able to run again! This wee It feels so good to be able to run again! This week marked the first time I've been able to run on the trails and my longest run in over 5 weeks.

Two weeks before that, I had strained my hamstring during a run so I took a week off to let it rest. I obviously should have taken it more seriously as the following week I suffered a grade 2 hamstring tear while running in the snow. I ended up with bruising and couldn’t walk more than a few steps without pain.

If you follow me on Strava, you've no doubt noticed all of the rehab runs and strength training I've been dutifully doing as I work weekly with a physio on a rehabilitation program. I believe the injury was actually not the result of overuse, but likely due entirely to mobility issues in my hips and hamstrings. I'd put in a half-dozen days on skis in the two weeks prior and hadn't been doing a lot of running, but I had been doing a lot of sitting.

So I've got lots of work to come as I continue to address the underlying issues, to slowly rebuild volume, and to ensure that I come back even stronger so that I can set myself up for success for the rest of the season and beyond! 🚀
