Training Builds You Up, Racing Breaks You Down, Injury..

May 29, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
Racing Breaks You Down

They say that training builds you up and racing breaks you down. Each training session is a small deposit into a piggy bank of fitness; each race a withdrawal.

This seems especially true with ultra running which usually requires at least a short amount of time off after a race. But many ultra runners are in the habit of racing so frequently that it could almost appear they ‘race to train’ instead of the other way around, treating their ‘B’ races like nothing more than a catered training run. “It’s just a training run” and “I’m just going to take it easy” are pretty commonly heard expressions during a race. Nothing wrong with that!

I’ve always found it hard to stick to my plans to take it easy during a race though. Once in the heat of the moment I always want to put my fitness to the test and leave it all out on the course. Even so, there’s still plenty of room for racing in my training.

April Training Recap: What Training? and Looking for the Silver Lining

May 12, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments

After just starting my racing season in March, April was supposed to be about starting to really build volume leading up to this month’s Sun Mountain 50 miler, but not before racing Diez Vista 50k which was to be my first ultra distance race of the year. I’d been feeling faster and stronger than ever and ready for an amazing season as a new member of Salomon Flight Crew.

I managed to finish Diez Vista in 5:04:37 for 9th place overall, but the race was far from a success, having stupidly spent the last half hobbling in pain.

March Training Recap: Racing Season has Begun; and Remember to Blink

April 2, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
Fog over Buntzen Lake

March was all about building volume for this coming weekend’s Diez Vista 50k, along with running my first two races of the year that I mentioned in February: The Cypress Yeti 10k Snowshoe Race, and the Coast Mountain Trail Series Cap Crusher 8k where I placed 2nd overall – my shortest race ever, my first podium finish and a great start to the trail racing season!

February Training Recap: The Results Are In; and More Speed Work

March 6, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier No Comments
January Training Re-Cap

In my January training recap, I mentioned having ramped up my training a little quickly after having just returned from a big trip over the holidays – not so much in terms of mileage, but time-on-feet which is how I measure my longer efforts. I had started strength training again along with weekly speed work at the track.

February’s focus continued to be on building a good foundation of speed and strength to get ready for a couple of shorter races coming up in March, including the Yeti Snowshoe Race at Cypress and the Coast Mountain Trail Series Cap Crusher, while starting to build volume and doing some recon runs for April’s Diez Vista 50k.

Speed Work for Ultra Runners: Is it important?

February 24, 2014 by Jeff Pelletier 8 Comments
Peak Centre Speed Work Clinic

When I started running about 5 years ago I jumped pretty much straight into the half-marathon and marathon distance. Far from a high school or collegiate running background here. As I began to follow a formal training plan, I found the tempo runs and speed work to be more difficult than the longer distance runs but I quickly realized how important they are even for marathon performance.

Sitting on top is a Monastery which was built on ruins of a ‘hermitage’ dating back to the 9th century. If you’re going to be a hermit, this seems like a pretty cool place to live, no?
While exploring the Kazgebi region of Georgia near While exploring the Kazgebi region of Georgia near the Russian border, I was struck by how much it reminded me of Nepal.

The mountains are huge here, some well over 5,000 metres high, shooting straight up in every direction from the valley floor. Towns are built on whatever little flat land there is.

I recently learned about the @transcaucasiantrail, a new route being built across the entire Caucasus Mountain range. This is one for the bucket list if there ever has been one! 🇬🇪

I’d met a bunch of runners the night prior from @tbilisirunningclub who were running in one of either the 5k, 12k or 23k races which started in Vake Park and took runners straight up the ridge overlooking the city.

This was just a fun run for me since I had 90 minutes of running on the schedule for that day anyway. But it was also a great chance to get another perspective on the city, while meeting more runners from the community.

The trail running scene is still developing in Georgia but @traillabrace is clearly at the forefront. I’d love to come back to run one of their longer races in the mountains up north in the Kazgebi region one day as well!
I’ve been in the Republic of Georgia for less th I’ve been in the Republic of Georgia for less than 5 days, but I’ve already managed to see and experience quite a bit of this incredible country 🇬🇪.

I spent the first two days in the capital Tbilisi where I explored the old town. I also met up with some local runners from @tbilisirunningclub at pasta dinner event where I did a short presentation, before then joining many of them at a short trail race by @traillabrace the next days just outside of town.

I then headed North to Kazbegi, near the Russian border to spend some time in the mountains for a couple of days. This area is just incredible! Finally, I made the long drive west to Kutaisi where I’ll now spend the next 3 days exploring some nearby sites. #georgia #tbilisi #exploretbilisi #travel
Last long run in the bag! My first race of the sea Last long run in the bag! My first race of the season starts in exactly 2 weeks: a 250 km, 7-day self-supported stage race in the country of Georgia 🇬🇪.

Time to taper! Oh yea, and pack all of my gear and nutrition for the race. And like, travel half way around the world. Otherwise, I’m pretty much ready to start. @salomonrunning #timetoplay
We’re heading to Patagonia in March of 2023, and We’re heading to Patagonia in March of 2023, and we want you to join us!

Patagonia has been on my bucket list for years. 🌄Together, we’ll explore mountain glaciers, deep blue lagoons, and incredible views from Argentina to Chile. We’ll be doing a few easy to moderate hikes, so this isn’t a running trip, but we’re going to squeeze in a couple of runs as well for those interested.

The trip officially launched yesterday with @trovatrip, and we’re stoked how quickly spot are filling up! But there’s still time to get in on early bird pricing. Visit the link in my bio to learn more and to register, and don’t hesitate to reach out directly with any questions! 🌄
