Sun Mountain 50 Mile 2015 Race Report

May 20, 2015 by Jeff Pelletier 1 Comment

My training was a little rocky leading up to the 2015 Sun Mountain 50 miler. The week after my first race of the year, the Diez Vista 50k in April, I managed to strain my left hamstring. A couple of weeks after that, I rolled my ankle pretty bad while running on some technical trail at night, resulting in a grade 2 sprain.

Rainshadow Running’s Sun Mountain was my first 50 miler back in 2013, and I’d always wanted to go back to see by how much I could improve my time. After getting injured at the 2014 Diez Vista 50k, I had to skip last year’s race, so there was no way I was going to miss out on toeing the line this year. I just wasn’t sure if I’d be able to finish. But if I was gonna run, I would aim for about 7:45 and top 10 overall.

It happened to be the weekend of the Fat Dog 120 trail race, so with the race cancelled this year we headed to Manning Park to fastpack the last 130k or so of the course unsupported.

Really cool to be right in the middle of the Fat Dog 120 trail race course, looking around at the surrounding peaks and ridges I’ve come to know so well in the summer! #earnyourturns

The polar vortex that hit Canada last week reporte The polar vortex that hit Canada last week reportedly sent the entire country below freezing at the same time. It would have been a great weekend to be an ice climber! Maybe I’ll consider taking it up next year.

For now I’ll just enjoy all this fresh powder that came with the recent storms, especially once the avalanche risk gets down to a more acceptable level.

Photo taken yesterday en route to find some mellow terrain near Sky Pilot in Squamish, BC. Had we known how amazing the snow was going to be, we would have gotten an earlier start! #earnyourturns

I ran my first 50 miler in a borrowed pair of Salomon Sense Ultras way back in 2013, after the other brand of shoes I’d planned on wearing fell apart right before the race. Salomon’s products have been an integral part of all my adventures ever since. #salomonsquad #timetoplay
